Erfahrungsbericht · Vom Smart-Teleskop zum Dual-RigField report · From smart telescope to dual rig
A smart telescope, a balcony on the edge of Berlin and the question of whether this can work at all. The test became a dual rig, the curiosity a hobby with a steep learning curve. A field report on stages and stumbling blocks, including wrong purchases, and on what beginners can take from it.
Berlin is not exactly the capital of astrophotography. Bortle 6 to 7 is what the light-pollution map says about my balcony on the edge of town, and yet the spot has something many locations lack: a really nice all-round view and lots of open space. The celestial south sits right in the middle, to the east the view is wide open, to the southwest trees and single-family houses set limits. Past the meridian I get about an hour and a half, depending on the target, and in the east I just clear trees and roofs at about twelve degrees.
Irgendwann dachte ich: Was soll’s.
I came to smart telescopes through YouTubers who made pictures with them. I landed on the Dwarf website quickly and kept looking at the Dwarf 3 for weeks, reading up on what it can do and now and then thinking none of it would be worth it. At some point I thought: why not. On 18 January 2026 I ordered it, with a mini tripod with a hydraulic head for EQ mode.
Better to spend 500 to 600 euros and find out whether the location works than to put 3,000 or 4,000 euros into a rig that has no targets here.
That was exactly the plan: the Dwarf was supposed to be a test. As soon as it arrived, the sky cleared, which suspiciously often happens to me with new gear, while others joke that every purchase is followed by permanent cloud. And then pictures came out that could do more than I ever expected. From Berlin, from a balcony in Bortle 6 to 7: that was not just a pleasant surprise, it overwhelmed me. Add the balcony’s biggest advantage: I don’t have to go anywhere. Step outside, set up, done, and even a cloud gap of an hour or two can be used.

If that already works so well with the Dwarf, I thought, a bigger instrument can do much more. A month later, on 19 February 2026, the first pictures came from an Askar 120 APO. I had briefly considered an 8-inch SCT but, after advice from Teleskop-Service in Bavaria, chose the 120 mm APO. The camera was at first a ZWO ASI2600MC Air, a camera with two sensors in one housing: the large APS-C sensor and a small one that handles guiding.
A Berlebach tripod with a matching adapter and a ZWO AM5 came with it. Two days after my order the AM7 was released. I wrote to the dealer, the AM5, which had not shipped yet, was cancelled, and for a surcharge I got the AM7. If you do it, do it properly, with room to grow.
The first filters, the Antlia RGB Ultra, showed that the dual sensor is not always ideal. The ASI Air camera has its drawbacks: it only works over Wi-Fi, my triple-glazed balcony doesn’t make that easier, and a LAN cable can’t be connected to this camera. Then, in the middle of a session, the cooling failed. I only noticed afterwards because the camera was unusually warm. Since I stream everything live on YouTube, I could look there to see what had happened.
Teleskop-Service reacted quickly and without fuss. The outcome was a solution I had wanted anyway: the regular ASI2600MC Pro and a separate ASIAIR Plus, even cheaper in combination than the Air camera, and I got some money back.
With the separate camera I needed a guide scope. First came a guide scope from Omegon, which I rarely used, then a 61 mm APO from William Optics, a very good offer and practically identical to the ZenithStar 61. As a guide scope it was really overkill: even at half a second to one second of exposure you could see nebulae and star clusters in the guide camera. Then the thought: the Omegon stays the guide scope, the William becomes a second telescope. The dual rig was born, two telescopes with their own cameras on one mount.
That complicates some things, such as dithering. With ASIAIR there is no synchronised method, and the common dual-rig solutions use a 90-degree offset to the axis, which software like ASIAIR normally can’t cope with. There are solutions for that too, such as iOptron’s 90-degree mount and, for the second telescope, an adapter from TS-Optics for fine alignment. More on that in a separate piece.
Kleine Pixel, große WirkungSmall pixels, big effect
Pixel statt Glas.
Planets were on the wish list too. The ASI2600, however, has comparatively large pixels, and a photographic 2× Barlow on the 120 mm APO achieved nothing: the focuser can’t travel far enough in, a sharp image is impossible. The Barlow was a wrong purchase and ruined two nights for me. The solution was an uncooled ASI715. Its pixels measure 1.45 micrometres, those of the 2600 3.76, and that magnifies the image more than a 2× Barlow. Pixels instead of glass.
On the 840 mm APO the 715 reaches about 0.36 arcseconds per pixel, a 2600 on a C8 with 2000 millimetres about 0.39. Almost the same zoom without having to buy a C8. Suddenly deep sky worked with it too: M27 fills the whole sensor, M16 and M17 work as a two-panel mosaic. In the astro community this sometimes meets scepticism because it departs from conservative astrophotography, but the detail that comes out is astonishing. You can try how this looks in the image yourself in the “Pixels instead of glass” calculator.
Die Arbeit nach der NachtThe work after the night
Image processing runs in parallel. I started with Siril, GraXpert and StarNet; later PixInsight and the RC Astro tools joined, which now also exist standalone and in other programs. Under Bortle 6 to 7, gradients and stray light are constant topics. Against the stray light I have meanwhile built something myself, a structure around the balcony that blocks most of it, which I call the light catcher. It is not a dew shield, more of a small balcony observatory. Then there are the calibration frames: I did darks from the start, flats at first with an LED panel and paper on the telescope, which is rather impractical, until a flat panel arrived.
